Period Stylings for Modern Guitarists
Master Leith Ambranid
This will be an exploration of how to play period music on a guitar without sounding like 70's folk revival. We'll get familiar with the basics of medieval harmony, and what we know of the period instruments and how they were used, with an eye to how you can use that knowledge to accompany a singer or create your own solo guitar arrangement. There will be plenty of live demonstrations, including a breakdown of some elements I use and how I combine them into a finished piece. We'll also look at some ways to adapt your style between different time periods an cultures. The last portion of the class will be for open discussion, and brainstorming through pieces that people want to work on. Instruments optional.
Master Leith Ambranid
Master Leith worked his first of many gigs as a Royal court musician in AS XXV, became the first Kingdom Bardic Champion in AS XXXVIII, was elevated to Laurel in AS XXXIX, and has always been drawn to the improvisational aspects of historical music. Leith McCombs started learning guitar at age 12 so he could be cool. It didn't work, but he stuck with it anyway and earned a BA in Music from WWU in 1994. Since then he has continued to squander his musical efforts on projects that will never make him famous.
