Paternosters & Rosaries: the intersection of beads & prayers in medieval society

This class will explore paternosters and rosaries, two types of prayer beads commonly used in medieval Christian culture. We will look at examples in art, extant finds, and discuss what is known from legal records such as wills. Additionally, we will examine the religious and cultural value that these important accessories took on. And finally, the course will investigate various supplies, suggestions, and techniques for constructing your own medieval prayer bead fashion accessory.
