Materials & Processes of Historical Oil Painting (part 2 of 2)

NOTE: This is a two hour class from 6:00 PM to 7:50 PM. There will not be a break in the middle

Mostly hands-on look at various materials & processes of Renaissance oil painting in Europe with an emphasis on Italy. Class will begin with a short lecture with supporting presentation on what oils and pigments were available and commonly used as well as some discussion of various issues including light fastness, issues of toxicity, longevity, & reaction between pigments will also be discussed.
Following will be a show and tell portion regarding various mediums created from historical treatises including sandarac varnish. Lastly, the painting process & sequence of layers will be discussed with a sporting presentation of historical evidence.

Please bring note taking materials and some kind of apron.

Note: additional warning for those who are sensitive to strong smells- we will be looking at a couple of thinners and resins which are quite aromatic.
