Materials: Note-taking supplies
Beowulf is very popular among gentles in the SCA, particularly those who focus on the earlier parts of our period. While there are bards who perform excerpts of it, in different ways, there are bound to be others who find its length, its difficult original language, and its very popularity daunting. This class will explore some of the context of the poem, historically and linguistically, and how we as SCA bards can use a contextualised understanding of the poem to select the right passage and venue and approach to perform in a number of SCA contexts and for a number of different SCA audiences. Though focused on performance the class is intended to be of interest and use to any student of Beowulf and Old English poetry.
