Fabrics for Rapier Armor - Strength and Durability
Donna Aziza al-Hurra (OSW)
Donna Aziza al-Hurra (OSW)
Cloth rapier armor can be made of any material as long as it passes the punch-test, which ensures it offers protection against a broken blade. But the fabric rapier armor is made of must also be comfortable, breathable, affordable, fashionable, and be able to weather the challenges of an athletic sport. In this class we will compare and contrast over 50 types of fabrics that are commonly used in SCA garb and rapier armor by evaluating how many layers consistently pass the punch test, how breathable they are in wet and dry environments, how well they wear and wash, and the cost of the fabrics. At the end a list of fabrics that scored well and sources where to get them will be provided.

Managing Burnout in the SCA
Dame Brighid Ross
What is burnout? And how does it affect us and our volunteer teams? Unfortunately, the most dedicated volunteers are usually the ones most likely to be prone to burnout. In the class we will talk about how to spot, how to support and most important how to avoid burnout in our volunteer teams and ourselves!
Dame Brighid Ross
Mistress Brighid has been active in the SCA for over 20 years. She has enjoyed volunteering in many ways, over many years as a gate worker, a water bearer, an event steward, branch Seneschal, a Kingdom Deputy, Landed Baroness, Royal Retinue and Kingdom Seneschal. She has worked with scores of amazing people and watched volunteers grow and blossom, and also watched some burn out and leave. Spanish Rapier ("La Verdadera Destreza")
Lord Hob
Lord Hob
Spanish rapier ("La Verdadera Destreza") can be extremely intimidating for newcomers. While there are an increasing number of Destreza texts available in English these days, it can be difficult to know where to start and how the written material relates to what we actually do in practice. This class is intended as an approachable and fun introduction to the key concepts behind this unique school of fencing. There will be no math and a bare minimum of terminology. No equipment is required, we'll use Nerf foam swords for the drills and demonstrations. Participants will walk away with an understanding of core ideas of Destreza, the feel of the system, and how it actually works in SCA context.

All The World’s A Stage: Cosplay is not new, we’ve just rebranded it and trivialized it in modern life. It played a much more central role to the social, spiritual, mystical life of people within the timeline of the SCA. While I will focus on how early theater relied heavily on many of the same storytelling techniques when presenting costumes that we now use when executing cosplay creations. We will touch on how to keep cost down while still maximizing visual. Impact in as period-accurate a way as possible.

Beowulf in the SCA: Considerations on Context and Performance
Wulfstan Hrafnsson, OL
Wulfstan Hrafnsson, OL
Materials: Note-taking supplies
Beowulf is very popular among gentles in the SCA, particularly those who focus on the earlier parts of our period. While there are bards who perform excerpts of it, in different ways, there are bound to be others who find its length, its difficult original language, and its very popularity daunting. This class will explore some of the context of the poem, historically and linguistically, and how we as SCA bards can use a contextualised understanding of the poem to select the right passage and venue and approach to perform in a number of SCA contexts and for a number of different SCA audiences. Though focused on performance the class is intended to be of interest and use to any student of Beowulf and Old English poetry.

Are you intimidated by a research project because you don't want to deal with citations, or you're not sure how to gather your research to effectively retrieve the information later, or maybe you're uncomfortable with outlines? Join this panel of researchers who use electronic tools to increase their effectiveness. Starting with a broad overview of some tools available and how you might use them, the panel will then focus on 2-3 tools they use like Zotero and Airtable. There will be room for full class Q&A and discussion at the end. This is not a class on how to use these tools, but an overview for
Presenters: This class will be instructed by a panel including Aelianora de Wyntringham, OL, Aline Swynebroke, OL, HL Alicia du Bois, and HL Gwir verch Merewith. All are passionate about research and have systems for making it more effective.
HL Gwir verch Merewith is from the Barony of Wyewood where she serves as Exchequer. Research is her passion and she enjoys finding ways to do it even more effectively. Coordinating this panel is important to her not only to share information but to learn more for her own work. Her research includes a paper on Medieval Attitudes Towards Spiders, with much help from Zotero, and several small explorations. She just began analyzing images of Opus Anglicanum pieces to discover patterns in the symbolism and color, using Airtable as a database (and having too much fun with it.) Gwir also likes to throw sharp objects at targets and embroider.
