Latvian Style Fingerless Mittens 1 (part 1 of 2)

This is a make and take class for advanced knitters.
You must know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off, increase and decrease. We will be covering Latvian cast on, Latvian braid, two at a time magic loop, color work, and inset thumb. This class will move pretty quickly as we will be trying to finish a pair of fingerless mittens.
Materials: I will have complete kits with all materials to make the handwarmers for sale for $15. You may supply your own supplies, needles and yarn. We will be using size 4 40” circular needles and DK weight yarn in three colors if you do not want to buy the kit.
Class size limit is 6. People may audit the class but will not receive any assistance. Please email HL Rosamond to sign up for this class in advance.
Materials & Processes of Historical Oil Painting (part 1 of 2)

Mostly hands-on look at various materials & processes of Renaissance oil painting in Europe with an emphasis on Italy. Class will begin with a short lecture with supporting presentation on what oils and pigments were available and commonly used as well as some discussion of various issues including light fastness, issues of toxicity, longevity, & reaction between pigments will also be discussed.
Following will be a show and tell portion regarding various mediums created from historical treatises including sandarac varnish. Lastly, the painting process & sequence of layers will be discussed with a sporting presentation of historical evidence.
Please bring note taking materials and some kind of apron.
Note: additional warning for those who are sensitive to strong smells- we will be looking at a couple of thinners and resins which are quite aromatic.
Cost: Class handout $3.

Posament is a textile embellishment technique using a wire coiled around a silk cord found almost exclusively in Birka, Sweden in the tenth century. We will discuss history, resources and creation methods for both the coiled wire (tentrad) and the posament itself.

This class will teach you the tools, safety, lingo and basics of how to make a glass bead and create basic bead embellishment using dots and lines of contrasting color.
There will be a historical bead furnace and bellows set up for you to check out as well so you can see how beads were made long ago!
Cost: Class fee is $10 per person for use of torches and materials. You will get a beginning bead making handout as well. Class maximum is 8 people for hands-on instruction on hothead torches. You keep all the beads that you make!

Please bring a mask, a single-handed sword that is rated for rapier and/or cut and thrust, a gorget, and gloves - there will be slow work but nothing at speed so full armor is encouraged but not required.
This class is appropriate for all carded rapier or cut and thrust fighters.

What legal and social restrictions did rural and urban women face, and how did they carve out "wiggle room" for themselves in light of social and familial expectations about their roles and responsibilities?

Dr. Stacey R. Davis is Professor of History at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, where she currently teaches classes like Gender History: Medieval and Early Modern Europe. She studied history as an undergraduate at Princeton and received her Ph.D. in French history from Yale University. Professor Davis' archival research focuses on collective memory and how common people craft narratives of their lives in light of both their personal desires and larger social expectations and realities.

Beginning Ukulele -- Chords

The ukulele is very similar to the Renaissance guitar. In this class, we will learn a few chords to strum while we sing along. All of the simple songs that we learn will be from 16th century England.

This class is geared towards people who have some weaving experience but want to learn tapestry weaving. The class will cover: warp selection, warping the loom, tension issues, and weft selection. Preparing your cartoon, different methods to weave shading, weaving shapes and circles. During the class there will be time for discussion on gothic tapestry and how it is different from modern techniques.
Students should bring: $10 for supplies; Tapestry Loom, scissors, note book, easel if they have one, warp materials if the loom is not pre-warped, weft wool, some will be supplied.
Please contact the teacher (trish.beadlady@gmail.com) to register for the class, as well as to communicate about what types of looms you have and how to warp them in advance. Breaking Through the Literature Review

Students in An Tir who are interested in research will learn how to evaluate their resources and write a short literature review. The instructor will review the process including strategies for writing a literature review.
The literature review writing process involves:
- Defining a topic.
- Researching a specific question.
- Locating relevant sources.
- Critically analyzing and evaluating sources.
- Developing a thesis statement.
- Writing the literature review.
This workshop will also include an exercise for students to practice the process for writing a literature review outside of Collegium. Students will be invited to join a Facebook group for further study of literature reviews.

This class is geared towards people who have some weaving experience but want to learn tapestry weaving. The class will cover: warp selection, warping the loom, tension issues, and weft selection. Preparing your cartoon, different methods to weave shading, weaving shapes and circles. During the class there will be time for discussion on gothic tapestry and how it is different from modern techniques.
Students should bring: $10 for supplies; Tapestry Loom, scissors, note book, easel if they have one, warp materials if the loom is not pre-warped, weft wool, some will be supplied.

Beginning Ukulele -- Picking a Melody

The ukulele is very similar to the Renaissance guitar. In this class, we will learn pick simple melodies, reading from ukulele tablature, which is a system of notating music that many people find easy to use. All of the simple songs that we learn will be from 16th century England.

Chasing is an embossing technique used on the front of the metal piece to create a relief image. It is done with hammer and punches on the face of the metal sheet. Students will work with a pitch pot and tools provided by the Instructor.
In this hands on introduction, students will learn to create low relief designs on sheet metal using small hammer driven punches. We will also discuss different metalworking traditions and approaches to chasing, various kinds of pitch and their properties, and the design and making of chasing tools. No metalsmithing experience is required, but accuracy with a hammer is very helpful.
Students who wish may bring: a favorite small hammer, an apron, and magnification, either a visor or reading glasses.
There will be a $5 materials fee, and chasing tools may be purchased from the instructor after the class.

An examination of the contents of 16th century medicine chest currently owned by the The Science Museum in London. Made for Vincenzo Giustiniani (d.1570), the last Genoese governor of the island of Chios in the eastern Aegean Sea. This chest still holds 126 bottles and pots for drugs, some of which appear to have 16th century contents. The chest was owned by the Giustiniani family until 1924.

A book to call upon any time you need a little inspiration. We will create a book, & begin to fill it. In this class we will create a pocket reference book that a scribe can take with them! I find these books to be immensely invaluable, and you will too! We will create a small book that is hard bound and then we will begin to fill it up with references.
Student Requirements: Students need to bring their own Scribal supplies, especially paints, brushes & writing utensils. Students are also encouraged to bring any books of illumination they may have with them.
Cost: $10.00 payable to the instructor in class

Microsoft Office 365 (O365) is the official method of electronic communication in the Kingdom of An Tir. This provides continuity for each office as the Officers behind those offices change and allows for efficient dissemination of information throughout our Kingdom. All Kingdom and branch officers have an email address for their office and are expected to check their email regularly and to use it for office-related communication.
Lady Alicia du Bois will lead a demonstration of how to log into Office 365, access and set up features such as email and OneDrive -- our official document repository. She will also talk about account usage best practices and officer transitions.
Magistra Julia will discuss how Kingdom and Branch Officers can leverage tools that are available within Office 365 to help your Office and/or Branch run smoothly!
Student Requirements: Students are welcome to bring their laptops and/or mobile devices but there will not be time during class to troubleshoot issues. There will be an IT Helpdesk session directly following this class where issues may be addressed.

Event Bids and Critical Milestones: deadlines and details, oh my!

Event stewarding should be fun! We have tools to help you with organization and planning. Learn how to: Put together a solid event bid. Navigate Kingdom calendar, social media, and Crier processes. Plan for and meet critical milestones. Communicate effectively with the populace, the Seneschalate, and the Crown. This class will focus on Kingdom events, as the requirements are a bit more strict, but most processes apply to branch event management as well.
This lecture discussion is open for anyone wishing to come listen, take notes, and ask questions.
Students are encouraged to bring note taking implements as well as a laptop or mobile device. A resource handout will be available until copies are gone.
Help Your Child Participate in an Event

Turkish buttons have been used to close garments from the Caucasus Mountains in the 10th century to even adorning the kaftans of Sulayman the Magnificent. Come learn the basic basket weave for these decorative buttons and take one home.
This class is for mature teens and adults able to thread a needle and work individually with some guided instruction.
Note: Hands-on portion of this class will accommodate up to 10 students but all are welcome to observe and ask questions.
Students should bring note taking supplies and scissors.
Cost: Donations to help defray cost of supplies are welcome but not required.

Viking Ship Construction: the Havhingsten fra Glendalough

In 2004 Alauns and Jorunn travelled to Denmark to witness the launch of the Havhingsten a 109' long Viking warship. It was the longest Viking Age ship re-construction up to that date. The original ship was built of Oak from the hills near Glendalough Ireland in a Norse shipyard in about 1020-1030 AD. It was filled with rock and scuttled in Roskilde Fjord to block an invasion fleet from Norway headed for the Danish capital.
Soren Thirslund, one of the Viking Ship Museum consultants from research on Viking Navigation, introduced Alauns and Jorunn to shipwrights for the Havhingsten re-construction who explained the history, construction and re-construction of the ship. They were given full access to the shipyard at Roskilde, the historic museum boat reconstructions and the Danish Maritime Museum in Helsingr Denmark. They visited the Viking outdoor museum at Ribe Denmark for small boat construction, the Bygdøy Norwegian Ship museum, historic boats at the Swedish National Historical museum in Stockholm and returned to Roskilde in time for the launch of the Havhingsten on Labor Day weekend 2004. They met the Havhingsten in Dublin in 2007 and again at the Roskilde Ship Museum in 2009. We fondly refer to the Havhingsten as 'Our Favorite Rowboat'.

Simple, Hands-On Tablet Weaving

Tablet weaving is an ancient art of narrow band weaving, dating back more than 500 years BCE to the late Middle Ages, marked by its high level of complexity and popularity all over Europe - from the Middle East to Scandinavia.
Want to try tablet weaving to see if you enjoy it? Have you tried tablet weaving and struggled with figuring out (or remembering) how to do it? Do you have a loom and want to put it to work? This is your opportunity to try your hand at threaded-in tablet weaving and see if you'll be hooked!
Students will be working on weaving a very simple Oseberg tablet weaving pattern which dates to 834 AD. We will have a limited number of inkle looms to share so you can try a little weaving. If you have an inkle loom, bring it and we can help you warp up for tablet weaving.
Cards, yarn and handout will be provided. More students can join the class if they don't mind sharing looms.
